Essential Practices

Many new teachers might ask the question, "What are essential practices?".  The simple answer is that they are a framework of principles and expectations outlined by the Ministry of Education that guide our daily actions.  It is our hope that they will lead to high levels of student achievement as well as reduced gaps in student achievement.

School Boards, as well as the schools within those boards, develop "action plans" that incorporate these guiding principles and expectations.  These are commonly referred to as the BIPSA and the SIPSA.

Essential Practices are such things as:

  • Growth Mindset
  • Goal setting
  • Problem solving
  • Reasoning
  • Discussion
  • Reason abstractly and quantitatively
  • Communication
  • Questioning
  • Accountable talk
  • Model
  • Use of tools
  • Assessment
  • Student work samples
What a teacher needs to ask themselves, is how am I utilizing these practices within my instruction?

A great activity for the beginning of the year is to focus in on what is a Growth Mindset is what that look like within our classroom and our students.  These can be done over the course of the first 20 days.  I have included a copy of my own Growth Mindset Lessons which I project through a Google Presentation for my students.  An example of this is shown below:

Helping our students to have that "I can" attitude,, as opposed to a fixed mindset, is key to their overall growth throughout their day. These lessons also show our students how and why we develop Learning Goals and Success Criteria not just in our subject matter but our lives.
